Even strangers on the road deserve humanity—how then do you withhold it from your own blood

RIP Humaira Asghar
Another daughter disowned.
Humaira Asghar’s own family refused to accept her body for her final rites.
Let that sink in.
I don’t care what differences exist between parents and their children—there is no excuse for denying someone their dignity in death. As flawed as we all are, the least we can offer another human being—let alone our own child—is a final farewell.
What kind of parent disowns their child for choosing to live life on her own terms? Are you so perfect, so righteous, that you cannot show an ounce of compassion? Even strangers on the road deserve humanity—how then do you withhold it from your own blood?
This is yet another heartbreaking reminder, just like the story of Radhika Yadav, of the deep-rooted misogyny and control women still face in the name of culture, pride, and family “honor.”
What was Humaira’s crime? That she wanted to live freely, to make her own choices? When will women stop being punished for wanting what should be their basic rights—freedom, respect, and safety?
As women, we are still denied autonomy, dignity, and at times, even the right to die with peace.
May her soul find the love and peace her family failed to give her in life—and in death.
Rest in power, Humaira. You deserved so much more.
